#1, The Northern Counties and Olympic Peninsula

Waterfall Finder's Guide to Western Washington northern counties

$16.95, plus $4 shipping and WA state sales tax.

For those hikers who share a passion about finding and visiting waterfalls, Western Washington has plenty of good opportunities.

The Waterfall Finder's Guide, Book One, strives to point out all scenically viable waterfalls east to west from the crest of the Cascade Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, and north to south from the Canadian border to and including King County. The presentation begins in Whatcom County. It includes the San Juan Islands and then runs south through Skagit, Snohomish, and King counties to the Seattle area, where it jumps to Aberdeen in order to trace the horseshoe-shaped Olympic Peninsula clockwise along US 101 around to Shelton.

Allurement and Danger

The pulse of moving water has always commanded attention, but when its power and grace appear in the more vertical expression of a waterfall, that attraction is transformed into pure enchantment. At low flow a given fall might be a collection of whispering rivulets that divide and blend, splash and spray, even appearing to float rather than plunge when airborne. With spring melt or heavy rains, the same descent may become an enraged and throaty torrent, hurling itself away from the confining rock as if in a bid for its freedom. Thus, a favorite site, visited over and over again, becomes an old friend of many moods.
